Applying for Veterans’ Pension or Aid and Attendance?

As an Elderly U.S. Veteran, you could be entitled to some monetary relief from the Veteran Administration if you meet certain requirements established by the VA. The VA recognizes the rising expenses of Elderly individuals – especially in regards to insurance, medical expenses, legal expenses, home care services, and other normal costs of daily living. They offer two forms of monetary relief: Veterans’ Pension and the Aid & Attendance Benefit in monthly payments.

Veterans’ Pension and Aid & Attendance Requirements:

  • Veteran must have provided at least 90 days of active duty service with at least one day during a wartime period – WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Korean War

  • Veteran or spouse must be at least 65 years old OR totally and permanently disabled OR receiving Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance

  • Veteran or spouse must have countable income less than the Maximum Annual Pension Rate set by Congress. The difference is the amount of money you qualify for. To help more Elders qualify, the VA allows you to subtract unreimbursed medical expenses that were paid for in the same year from countable income.

  • For Aid & Attendance applicants, you must prove to the VA that you require the in-home assistance of another individual in order to remain independent at home. The VA suggests submitting a physician’s report that details any medical condition you have that justifies in-home care and what various tasks you need assistance with.

At A-1 Home Care, we understand how important it is to be well-informed about Veterans’ Benefits and provide accurate information to the VA on the first application attempt so that you can receive financial assistance as soon as possible. We provide case managers who can help you at any stage of the application process. Whether you need general information about VA Benefits, determining your income eligibility, filling out and submitting an online application, or determining what information to include in a physician’s report for the Aid & Attendance Benefit, we can help.
